Professor Knese, I noticed that the Math 2D page is not linked from your main webpage (the link is there but it’s not active). I appreciate the effort you put into creating this valuable online resource. I’m looking forward to meeting you 3 times a week at 8am for a calculus lecture. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your break.

Hello Professor Knese,
I noticed on the course syllabus that you have two midterms planned. for each one, will they be on a monday, wedsneday, or friday. I need to plan the training for work around it. Thank You and Happy New Year, -Math Lover
Comment by Mina — January 2, 2008 @ 8:58 pm |
At the moment I have the first exam scheduled for Monday, January 28 and the second on Wednesday, February 20.

Hello Professor Knese,
I had a difficult time reaching this page. Do you think that you can make a link on your main page that will direct someone that wants to comment about this website so that it will be easier to access? I look forward to meeting you on the Monday you come back and seeing you 3 times a week. This course has me all excited because it seems like the curriculum is going to be a challenge for me. I also like the idea of having a quiz after every lecture because I find that it is a good way to apply what we learned in lecture.

Sure, I’ll see what I can do.
Comment by gregknese — January 5, 2008 @ 9:44 pm |
are the discussion sections beginning tomorrow?
Comment by Johnny — January 7, 2008 @ 10:40 pm |
Yes, or rather today the 8th. Sorry for the short notice. The discussion section will mainly be logistical.

I took Quiz Zero and it said my answer for the first question was wrong when it was right. It said to move downward, but not down the y-axis so I said (4, 0, -3). The answer in the back of the book also agrees. Since the quiz isn’t being graded for correctness, it’s not a big deal but I just wanted to point that out in case it hasn’t been already.
Comment by Matthew — January 8, 2008 @ 8:40 am |
You’re right! I went to the whole trouble of putting the correct answer in the list and then for some reason picked something else as the right answer. Thank goodness it’s a test quiz.
Comment by gregknese — January 8, 2008 @ 10:42 am |
For the quiz–if I decided to sign on and do it partially then come back and finish it later that day will I be penalized? Or once I sign in to take the quiz I HAVE to finish it.
Comment by Nahal — January 8, 2008 @ 11:58 am |
I think that as long as you don’t “submit” the quiz you can work on it later; however, it may not save your answers (I’m not exactly sure about this–maybe someone can tell me). This shouldn’t be a big deal since the quizzes I’m giving you will generally just be two quick problems.
Comment by gregknese — January 8, 2008 @ 1:38 pm |
alright thanks!
Comment by Nahal — January 8, 2008 @ 2:38 pm |
You are correct professor. I experimented a little and found out that you can cancel the quiz however it does not save any of the work. I look forward to seeing you in person on monday.
Comment by Marc — January 9, 2008 @ 4:09 pm |
Great, thanks for the clarification!

Was there a quiz today in discussion. I just got around to reading the syllabus and it says we have both inclass quzies and online quizes. I did the online one, but wasnt able to make it to Thursday discussion.
Comment by Ben — January 10, 2008 @ 8:11 am |
Yes, there should’ve been a quiz in discussion.
Comment by gregknese — January 10, 2008 @ 10:43 am |
Would that discussion-quiz have been on Tuesday morning? I missed that one, but I was there this morning (Thursday) and there wasn’t a quiz.
Comment by Sarah — January 10, 2008 @ 2:59 pm |
I’ll get all of this sorted out when I get back. For now, I’ll just say that nothing bad will happen to you if you miss a quiz during this first week. I promise.
Comment by gregknese — January 10, 2008 @ 3:03 pm |
i was at discussion every day and can confirm that there was no quiz.
Comment by aditya — January 10, 2008 @ 11:24 pm |
That depends on your TA. We had a quiz on Thurs. if your TA was Pipan.
Comment by Stewie — January 12, 2008 @ 12:47 pm |
Yeah, I can confirm that too… so how does that work then? Some discussions don’t have quizzes?
Comment by David — January 14, 2008 @ 3:56 pm |
No, this is just some confusion from the first week. From now on every Thursday discussion section will have a quiz or an in-class assignment. Tuesdays will be more casual.

Hello Professor Knese,
I was just wondering how our final grades will be calculated. Like how must percent will our online quizzes be? Will there be any dropped online quizzes?
Comment by Kathleen — January 18, 2008 @ 12:01 pm |
I have a grade recipe in the syllabus. Online quizzes are worth 1/12 of your grade. I don’t think I will be dropping any online quizzes because the grading scale is already extremely generous (you get 4/5 points for an incorrect answer and 5/5 for a correct one).
Comment by gregknese — January 18, 2008 @ 12:35 pm |
So the lowest discussion quiz is dropped, right? Because on my eee grades page, it indicates that one of my quizzes is being dropped (Hopefully that’s not a mistake…).
Comment by Aditya — January 30, 2008 @ 5:36 pm |
I’ll drop two quiz scores, but don’t tell anyone! I want to keep it a secret.
Comment by gregknese — January 30, 2008 @ 5:42 pm |
hahahahaha are you being really generous because our test scores are really low?
Comment by Insert Name — January 31, 2008 @ 7:17 am |
Am I being generous about what?

Is the 3D sketch assignment out of 100?
Comment by Jay — February 1, 2008 @ 4:00 pm |
Yes.
Comment by gregknese — February 1, 2008 @ 4:31 pm |
are the f_x and f_y on the quiz supposed to be f sub x and f sub y?
Comment by Aditya — February 5, 2008 @ 9:42 pm |
Never mind… they are.
Comment by Aditya — February 5, 2008 @ 9:59 pm |
What’s the cutoff between A’s and A-’s?
Comment by Aditya — February 19, 2008 @ 7:07 pm |
Are the grades for the midterms going to be bumped up at all?
You said a while back that “I might bump the mean of an exam up if I think it is too low.”
Were the first exam scores low enough to be bumped?
Comment by Aditya — February 20, 2008 @ 5:53 pm |
The cutoff will be 93.
No, the first exam scores were not low enough to be bumped up. It’s too early for me to speculate about the second midterm.
Comment by gregknese — February 21, 2008 @ 7:05 am |
Please give us at least a small boost (5-10 percent) on the second midterm. A lot of us ran out of time (personally, I couldn’t think about the problems and made careless errors because of the time pressure).
Comment by amandale — February 21, 2008 @ 1:44 pm |
Only on the condition that if the class as a whole did extremely well I get to lower your grades.
Comment by gregknese — February 21, 2008 @ 2:53 pm |
Well, if everyone got 95+ I say you can lower us all 5-10 percent
Comment by amandale — February 21, 2008 @ 11:28 pm |
I have a couple of questions. One is about a quiz that was due today (3/7/08)–I and at least one other person couldn’t access it at all or even find it on EEE, so we didn’t get it done. I met one other person who did find and do it though, so I’m concerned about losing points over a quiz that I couldn’t access. Would you re-post it with a new due-date or something, please?
Secondly, I’m wondering about which variable to integrate ‘with respect to’ first. I learned in Math 2B that to integrate with dx you sort of draw ‘vertical boxes’, so that if the vertical lines cross two different equations then you set up two separate integrals, and the same with respect to dy. I hope that makes sense. So, in two variables, do you put ‘that variable’ (dx w/vertical boxes or dy w/horizontal boxes) on the OUTSIDE or on the INSIDE of the integral set-up?
I think you’ve explained this before but I didn’t really understand it. Thanks!
Comment by Sarah — March 7, 2008 @ 9:18 am |
I changed the due date on the quiz to Monday. I do not know why you can’t find it though. Check under tools and quizzes on EEE. I’ll probably change the due date again to Wednesday, so don’t worry.
If I understand your question correctly, the answer is OUTSIDE. If the outside variable is y you are dividing the region into horizontal slices and if the outside variable is x you are dividing the region into vertical slices.
Comment by gregknese — March 7, 2008 @ 3:34 pm |
Wait, so the quiz that was supposed to be done by today is due on Monday? I’m so confused about how this quiz is working.
Comment by Huy — March 7, 2008 @ 8:05 pm |
Doesn’t EEE list the due dates of quizzes for you? I don’t have a nice way of seeing what you can see, but I did change the due date a while ago.
Comment by gregknese — March 8, 2008 @ 6:49 am |
Well, yea but I thought there was a quiz that was due on Friday…I got two emails saying that there were quizzes activated, one due yesterday and then one due on Monday. When I logged on, there was only one quiz active, the one due Monday. I’m so confused but I’ll try to figure this out.
Comment by Huy — March 8, 2008 @ 10:50 am |
What topics will be covered on the final? Is it a comprehensive final or will it cover Chapter 16?
Comment by Edwin — March 12, 2008 @ 11:36 am |
It will be comprehensive. Half chapter 16 and half everything else.
Comment by gregknese — March 12, 2008 @ 11:37 am |
Your quiz questions didn’t ask any questions regarding the other chapters only chapter 16. Perhaps you can add some review questions from the earlier chapters as well?
Comment by Fugly Clown — March 12, 2008 @ 8:07 pm |
Oh, don’t worry there are more quizzes in store.
Comment by gregknese — March 12, 2008 @ 9:10 pm |
So, do we really have to memorize the names of all those quadratic surfaces in 13.6 (I think). You know–elliptical blah, hyperbollic blah, and so on?
Comment by STRESSED OUT student that is getting gray hairs due to this final — March 15, 2008 @ 12:20 pm |
Do I really have to answer questions like “do we really have to do blah and blah?” ?
I wouldn’t stress out over minutiae of terminology…Just have some general familiarity with the quadric surfaces.
