The Coin Problem and a Theorem of Sylvester

I’ve recently stumbled upon the following classical problem from recreational math and since I haven’t seen a proof of it online, I thought I would provide one. The coin problem is the following. Suppose you are given a treasury containing n types of coins: they have the values v_1, v_2, \dots, v_n, and these values (collectively) have no common factor. It is a fact that any sufficiently large amount can be obtained using only these coins, and so it would be nice to know the first amount that can be obtained with the property that every amount larger can be obtained but the value before it cannot.
